The fourth-grade ELA students from Ms. Leslie Smith's class at CHSD170's Roosevelt School recently participated in the Trick or Treat for UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund) campaign.
Before participating in the event, Smith's students learned about the way of life of impoverished children from around the world in need in of healthy food, clean water, and medicine who would benefit from the activity.
Later, the students canvassed their neighborhoods and collected money from family, friends, and neighbors in the amount of $439.02.
Smith was most pleased at her students' response to the UNICEF activity.
"The selflessness of my students showed in their contributions to those in need, and they outwardly shared in the joy of giving," she said.
"Each day, some students asked if I would allow them more time to collect money."
"I am very proud to be a part of such a caring group of children," Smith concluded.
Trick or Treat for UNICEF began in 1958 as a way to help children still suffering the after-effects of World War II and in dire need of food, clean water, and medicine. Since then, millions of students across the United States have canvassed their neighborhoods on Halloween carrying their collection boxes and calling out, "Trick or Treat for UNICEF!"
The annual UNICEF tradition of 'Kids Helping Kids' has helped raise more than $175 million since the program began.
